Press Release

Re: Intended Legal (Supreme Court) Challenge Against the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) Act 2017

The DWG would like to bring to the attention of the general public that following its thorough examination of the CRC Act 2017 which is the enabling legal instrument designed to mandate the long overdue review of the 1997 Constitution, it came to the reasoned conclusion that such an Act is unconstitutional (wholly inconsistent with the dictates of Section 226 of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia) as was highlighted in a DWG Article published on the 4th/5th April 2018.

As a result, it was decided that such fundamental unconstitutionality is so grave that we deem it to be one which is worthy of legal (Supreme Court) challenge under Section 5 of the Constitution.

May it please you to know that in pursuing this course of action, we aim to attract a broad civil alliance from every work of life both within and outside The Gambia.

In light of the above, appropriate correspondence (copy attached) have prior to this publicity been disseminated to Parliamentary opposition political parties, several voluntary & civil society organisations and wider Gambian civil society entities inviting them to, and requesting their meaningful participation in the noble Cause to conclusively disrupt the emergence of another dictatorship.

We hereby also solemnly ask all Gambians and friends of The Gambia alike to for all intents and purposes treat this Publicity as an open invitation to join this noble and worthwhile Cause in whatever capacity possible/feasible.
